7th Tsunami anniversary: Sea water enters villages in cuddalore District

        Sea water entered about 10 fishing hamlets in Cuddalore late on Monday, the seventh anniversary of the tsunami, creating panic among the people living there. With formation of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, the sea was rough with strong waves. A cyclone-warning signal has been hoisted at the Cuddalore port. People in the fishing hamlets such as Devanampattinam, Thazanguda, Singarathope and Akkaraikori started panicking as the shore was submerged in sea water entirely. Fishermen who anchored their boats on the shore started shifting them to safer places. They also pulled back a few small boats using ropes to prevent them from being dragged into the sea by the waves.

Sanmar Group may tap market for expansion in Cuddalore

            Sanmar Engineering, a Sanmar Group firm, said it is scouting for partners to diversify into high pressure engineering valves business and the  nuclear sector. "We would like to fill this gap with a couple of joint ventures," says Vijay Sankar, deputy chairman of The Sanmar Group.

            "We have catered to the requirements of this (nuclear) space in the past. With this sector opening up, it presents a huge opportunity," said Sankar, adding that the company is not averse to tapping the market to fund the expansion. "Till date, our expansion has largely been met through ploughing back profits, internal accruals and debt. While these sources are cheaper forms of finance, if the need arises, we are open to raising capital from outside," said Sankar.

              The engineering division clocked a turnover of Rs 1,225 crore last year, of which the foundry business accounted for Rs 750 crore. Sankar said the company is eyeing a 20% compounded annual growth rate for the next five years. The engineering company is looking to close its books with Rs 1,500 crore in turnover this year.  Sanmar Engineering, which has completed 35 years, has five joint ventures and 12 business units spread in five locations across the globe.

            On the Rs 254-crore debt restructuring of TCI Sanmar Chemicals, Sankar said the company is in talks with banks. A consortium of banks led by Bank of India had advanced around $565 million to fund an Egyptian acquisition. The group had acquired Trust Chemicals in Port Said in 2007 so that Sanmar could ship raw materials from Port Said to its plant in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. While banks have asked for a corporate guarantee, Sankar says this is a non-recourse loan with a small element of guarantee. "When it comes to repayments, we have a track record of zero defaults," he said.

கடலூர் துறைமுகம் புத்துயிர் பெற்றது : மியான்மர் நாட்டில் இருந்து மரக்கட்டைகள் வந்தடைந்தது

         மியான்மர் நாட்டில் (பர்மா) இருந்து கப்பல் மூலம் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட மரக்கட்டைகள் கடலூர் துறைமுகத்தில் இறக்கப்படுகின்றன.
 

           கடலூர் துறைமுகம் 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பழமை வாய்ந்ததாக இருந்த போதிலும், மாநில அரசு போதிய கவனம் செலுத்தாததாலும், கடலூரில் அதற்காக குரல் கொடுக்க சரியான அரசியல் தலைமை இல்லாததாலும், துறைமுகம் அடிப்படை வசதிகள் இன்றி காணப்படுகிறது. 40 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரை 10 ஆயிரம் பேருக்கு வேலை வாய்ப்பளித்த கடலூர் துறைமுகத்தில், தற்போது 10 தொழிலாளர்களுக்குக் கூட வேலைவாய்ப்பு இல்லை.
 

           துறைமுக அதிகாரிகளின் முயற்சியால் அவ்வப்போது ஓரிரு கப்பல்கள் வந்து போகின்றன. சிப்காட் தொழிற்சாலைகளுக்கு வரும் கப்பல்கள் நேரடியாக, அந்த தொழிற்சாலைகள் அமைத்துள்ள சிறிய துறைமுகங்களுக்குச் சென்று விடுகின்றன. கடந்த 2008-ம் ஆண்டு தலா 27 ஆயிரம் டன் யூரியா உரம் ஏற்றி வந்த 2 கப்பல்கள் கடலூர் துறைமுகம் வந்தன. துறைமுகத்தில் யூரியாவை சேமித்து வைக்கவும், துறைமுகத்தில் இருந்தே சரக்குகளை, ரயில் வேகன்களில் ஏற்றும் வசதியும் இல்லாததால், யூரியவை இறக்குமதி செய்தவர்கள் பெரிதும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டனர்.
 

          எனவே யூரியா கப்பல்கள் தொடர்ந்து வரவில்லை. தற்போது மரக்கட்டைகள் ஏற்றப்பட்ட கப்பல் மியான்மரில் இருந்து வந்துள்ளது. மே 28-ம் தேதி மியான்மர் நாட்டின் யான்கேன் துறைமுகத்தில் இருந்து புறப்பட்ட யான்பயோ என்ற இந்தக் கப்பல், சனிக்கிழமை கடலூர் வந்தது. கடலூர் துறைமுகத்தில் இருந்து ஒரு கி.மீ. தொலைவில் நங்கூரமிட்டு உள்ளது. இதில் 2,600 டன் எடை கொண்ட 1,460 காட்டு மரக்கட்டைகள் எடுத்து வரப்பட்டு உள்ளன. 

          இவைகளை பாஜிகள் மூலம் (சரக்கு மிதவை) கரைக்குக் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டு, துறைமுக சேமிப்புக் கிடங்குகளுக்குக் கொண்டு வரும் பணி ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை தொடங்கியது. கடலூர் துறைமுகத்தில் இருந்து இந்த மரக்கட்டைகள் டிரக் லாரிகள் மூலம், புதுவையில் உள்ள பிளைவுட் தயாரிக்கும் தொழிற்சாலைக்குக் கொண்டு போகப்பட உள்ளன. கப்பலில் இருந்து அனைத்து மரக்கட்டைகளையும் கரைக்குக் கொண்டுவர ஒரு வாரம் ஆகலாம் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. மியான்மர் நாட்டுக் கப்பலில் மரக்கட்டைகள் கடலூர் வந்ததன் மூலம், கடலூர் துறைமுகத்துக்குக் கட்டணமாக ரூ. 5 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும் என்றும் துறைமுக அதிகாரி ஒருவர் தெரிவித்தார்.
 

           சரக்கு முறையாகக் கையாளப்படுவதாக புதுவை பிளைவுட் நிறுவனமும், மியான்மர் நிறுவனமும் திருப்தி அடைந்தால், மாதம் இரு கப்பல்கள் கடலூர் துறைமுகத்துக்கு வருவதற்கு வாய்ப்பு இருப்பதாகவும் அந்த அதிகாரி தெரிவித்தார். கடலூர் துறைமுகத்துக்கு தொடர்ந்து கப்பல்கள் வந்தால் கடலூர் மக்களுக்கு வேலைவாய்ப்பு அதிகரிக்கும் என்றும் அவர் கூறினார்.

Push to develop minor ports in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Colachel

             Union ministry of shipping welcomed the decision of the state government to improve cargo handling capacity by improving the proposed minor port development projects. The state government declared on Friday that it will develop minor ports along the TN coastline in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Colachel.

             The project was first proposed by the central government as part of its National Maritime Agenda to develop minor ports rather than major ports along the countryside. K Mohandas, union shipping secratary, said that it was a welcome move. "We made the suggestion to all states with a coastline. We are looking at improved cargo handling capacity by 2020 by giving more improtance to the development and advancement of minor ports," said Mohandas.  The projects with an aim to increase the trade capacities of the state will be completed in a public-private partnership.

Cuddalore Port active after three years

CUDDALORE: 

         After a gap of three years, the Cuddalore Port has become active again owing to arrival of a ship from Yangon, Myanmar, carrying timber cargo. It anchored about a km offshore on Friday night and will remain there for the next four days to unload massive logs.

          The consignment meant for a private company in Puducherry will be later transported by trucks. Official sources told The Hindu that the ship, m.v. Yawn Byae, had brought over 1,400 logs, weighing over 2,600 tonnes. As many as seven private barges were pressed into service on Saturday morning to bring the logs to the shore. While one crane was fixed aboard the ship, another installed on the shore to handle the logs.

         Sources said that the arrival of the ship had created job opportunities to not less than 250 persons, including 150 direct and 100 indirect jobs. Besides this, the port would also earn revenue of about Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh towards berthing and handling charges. The sources further said that it was in 2008 that the last ship landed at the Cuddalore Port with coal from Indonesia. The sources revealed that hereafter the port would be getting busy as ships would call on the port at regular intervals of two-three months.

            Since the Cuddalore port was said to be nearer to the southern destinations than the Chennai port, routing cargo through the former was said to be less expensive. Moreover, all the infrastructure such as barges, cranes, stacking places, and godowns were available in adequate measure at the Cuddalore port. The port could comfortably handle urea, bulk cargo, packed cargo and timber cargo. However, it could not receive ships carrying containers because it required berthing of the ship closer to the shore and only major ports had put up such a facility.

            The sources observed that since each log was weighing about two tonnes, these would be loaded on to the trucks, at the rate of 10 each, for its onward journey to Puducherry.

Over 200 fishermen taken into custody

CUDDALORE: 

        MLA G.Aiyappan, municipal chairman T. Thangarasu and over 200 fishermen owing allegiance to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were taken into custody when they tried to besiege the Cuddalore Port office here on Wednesday.

         They were protesting the arrest of 106 fishermen from Akkarapettai in Nagapattinam district by the Sri Lankan Navy. They raised slogans decrying the action of the Sri Lankan Navy. It was reported that 106 fishermen had set sail from Akkarapettai on February 12 in 18 boats. They were surrounded by Sri Lankan fishermen and handed over to the Sri Lankan Navy. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, who addressed the gathering in front of the Port office, said that though the agitation was organised at short notice, there was huge gathering of fishermen and it indicated the seriousness of the problem.

           The State government had been expressing displeasure over the ill-treatment meted out to Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on the high seas and, therefore, it had taken up the fishermen's cause with the authorities concerned. If justice is not rendered to the Tamil Nadu fishermen, the agitation would continue, Mr. Panneerselvam said. After the Minister left, the police personnel rounded up the protestors. Before boarding the police van, Mr. Aiyappan said that the Sri Lankan Navy should free the Tamil Nadu fishermen unconditionally and immediately.
