Student from Assam killed in group clash at Annamalai University

Cuddalore:

           An engineering student from Assam has been killed in a group clash between students from Bihar and Assam studying at Annamalai University in Chidambaram in the district, police said. Dharupa Joth Dhatha (23), a third-year student, was killed last night when the students used deadly weapons in their they clash with each other near the university, police said. Two students of the university, including one from Bihar, has been arrested, they said. Adding that the clash took place due to previous enmity, they said police has been posted at the university in the aftermath of the incident.

Candidate upset by loss verbally abuses voters in Chidambaram

Cuddalore:

           Tension prevailed in the temple town of Chidambaram in the district after a candidate, upset by her defeat in the civic polls, visited the houses of the voters to whom she had allegedly distributed saris ahead of the election and verbally abused them. Residents of the 28th ward in the town retaliated to the alleged abuse last night of Latha Rajathi, the PMK candidate, by throwing the saris allegedly gifted by her in front of her house and burning them, police said. The results of the civic polls in Tamil Nadu were announced yesterday, with AIADMK sweeping the elections. An AIADMK candidate also won the 28th ward. As tension mounted in the area among voters, police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse them, in which one person was injured, they said.

Students’ party gets loud in Cuddalore, cops swoop in

CUDDALORE: 

     The Cuddalore police busted a party hosted by a group of students in Chidambaram in the wee hours of Sunday. Police said African students from a private university in Chidambaram had booked a wedding hall on South Car Street within Chidambaram town limits on the pretext of hosting a prayer meeting on Saturday evening.

        Students started gathering at the venue from 6pm onwards on Saturday. A sizeable number of local students had joined the party. By 9pm about 250 students had gathered at the hall. The music and dancing soon drew the attention of neighbours, who called in the police.  A patrolling team reached the wedding hall and questioned some representatives of the students present at the party about the use of a public place during odd hours. Police managed to persuade the students to vacate the venue after a brief argument. Inquiries revealed that the students have organised parties at undisclosed locations periodically, inviting friends and acquaintances from the university and the surrounding region.

            This time they had booked the wedding hall for Rs 1,000 per hour. They had charged Rs 100 per person for the party. Deputy superintendent of police (Chidambaram) TK Natarajan told the Times of India that the police intervened to disperse the students.  "They (organisers) conducted themselves well after police intervened and stopped their programme. They dispersed immediately at our instruction. There are charges that organisers hosted nude dances which are totally baseless. Their dress code and activities may have mislead the local people," Natarajan said.

         அண்ணாமலை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் வழங்கப்பட்டு வரும் ஐந்தாண்டு ஒருங்கிணைந்த பட்டப் படிப்பு, கல்லூரிகளில் கற்றுக் கொடுக்கப்படும் இளநிலை பட்டப்படிக்கு இணையானது என தமிழக அரசு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. 

                இந்தப் பட்டப் படிப்பைக் கொண்டு அரசுப் பணிகளில் சேரும் போது, புதிய குழப்பம் உருவாகும் என பல்வேறு தரப்பினரும் கருத்துத் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.  கல்லூரிகளிலும், பல்கலைக்கழகங்களிலும் ஒரு புதிய படிப்பைத் தொடங்க வேண்டுமென்றால் பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக் குழுவின் ஒப்புதல் தேவை. கலை மற்றும் அறிவியல் படிப்புகளை திறந்த நிலை பல்கலைக்கழகங்கள் மூலம் கற்பிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால் பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக் குழு (யு.ஜி.சி.,), தொலைதூர கல்விக் கவுன்சில் ஆகியவற்றின் ஒப்பதல் பெற வேண்டும். தொழில் சார்ந்த படிப்புகள் எனில் யு.ஜி.சி., தொலைதூர கல்விக் கவுன்சில், அகில இந்திய தொழில்நுட்ப கல்விக் குழுமம் (ஏ.ஐ.சி.டி.இ.,) ஆகியவற்றின் ஒப்புதல் அவசியம்.  ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட கல்லூரி அல்லது திறந்தநிலை பல்கலைக்கழகமானது, தான் கற்றுக் கொடுக்கும் படிப்பை, நடப்பில் உள்ள மற்றொரு படிப்புக்கு இணையாகக் கருதி உத்தரவிட வேண்டுமானால் அரசுக்கு அதுகுறித்து விண்ணப்பிக்க வேண்டும்.

Traffic constable assaulted by AIADMK group near Chidambaram

CUDDALORE: 

        The police have booked cases against Thoppu K.Sundar (40), Chidambaram town secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and a group of his supporters on charges of assaulting a traffic constable.

         Traffic constable Ravanan (36) has been admitted to Chidambaram government hospital. In this connection, the police have secured two persons - Purushothaman, an anti-social element, and Sudhakar, a car driver. The Chidambaram police are on the lookout for others, including Sundar, Suresh Babu, Arul, Sivakumar and some others. Police sources said that on Wednesday morning, Mr. Ravanan was posted at the Pachaiyappa school road junction to regulate traffic when he noticed two cars cruising through Sabanayakar Street, unmindful of the stretch being a one-way.

        Sundar and his supporters were travelling in one of the cars. It was followed by another car, in which Kumaratchi union AIADMK secretary A.K. Pandian and his followers were travelling. When Mr. Ravanan signalled the cars to stop, they did not oblige. When he tapped on the bonnet of one of the cars as it passed by, the AIADMK functionaries stopped the vehicle and picked up a quarrel with him. However, Mr. Ravanan said that he would not allow the vehicles to pass through the wrong side of the one- way. The irate AIADMK men forcefully opened the car door, pushing down Mr. Ravanan, who standing close to the vehicle. They assaulted him and sped away.

Based on a complaint from Mr. Ravanan, the Chidambaram police booked cases on the AIADMK men under the following sections: 

Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 

506 (2) (criminal intimidation), 

353 (deterring a government servant from discharging duty), 

332 (causing hurt), 147 (rioting) and 

294 (indulging in obscene act) of Indian Penal Code.

Later, Superintendent of Police P.Pakalavan called on the constable at the hospital.

Panel resolves dispute over fee structure in Chidambaram Kamaraj Matriculation Higher Secondary School

CUDDALORE: 

          A peace committee meeting, headed by Revenue Divisional Officer M.Indumathi, resolved the dispute arising out the size of the fee collected by Kamaraj Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Chidambaram on Monday.

         The management had been directed to put up on the notice board the school-specific recommendations of Justice Raviraja Pandian Committee on fee structure and also whatever excess fees it had collected under various heads. The school was specifically told to adhere to the Committee recommendations and dispense with the practice of issuing just slips for the fees paid and issue proper receipts for all payments remitted.

         The management was also instructed to reinstate Class IV student David Raja, who was sent out of the school for not paying the fees fixed by the school, and, also to desist from taking any penal action against 60 students who refused to pay the excessive fees in 2010-2011 and collect only the revised fees. As parents objected to the collection of capitation fees in the name of a trust and fees for extra-curricular activities, the management was told not to force upon students any such activity without the consent of the parents.

            A major point sticking out in the meeting was the Clause 10 of Justice Raviraja Pandian Committee, which has left it to the schools to determine the size of fees to be collected for technology-driven education such as running smart classes or imparting e-learning. The school was collecting Rs. 10,000 a year (it varies just by Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 for lower classes) for smart classes. Correspondent C.R. Lakshmikandan took the view that the amount would differ from school to school, depending upon the agencies which they had contracted, number of students and so on and, therefore, it could not be uniform for all schools.

             Chief Educational Officer C. Amudhavalli said she would make a comparative study about smart classes in about 10 schools in the district and ascertain from IT professionals or agencies as to how much expenditure a school would incur. Accordingly, she would arrive at the fees for smart classes and intimate it to the school by July 15. She pointed out that unusually a large number of students, 100, had been sent out from the school by issuing transfer certificates. When considering the total strength of the school to be 2,500 the number of TCs issued was on the higher side, she said.

          Mr. Lakshmikandan contended that TCs were issued on the request of parents because some of them wanted their wards to be migrated to other schools owing to transfer, some students might find the matriculation syllabus difficult to follow, and some might even go to a school which they consider as highly reputed. Mr Lakshmikandan also said that as per the Right to Education Act, students should not be detained up to Class VIII but there was no provision that no disciplinary action should be taken for insubordination and causing disturbance in the class.

           The teachers' representative put forth the view that at a time when the teachers were demanding pay scale on a par with the government schools any attempt to reduce the size of the fees would cut into their salary. Inspector of Matriculation Schools R.Arunmozhithevi, tashildar J.Rajendran, Deputy Superintendent of Police T.K.Natarajan, and C.Raju of Manitha Urimai Padhukappu Iyakkam participated.
