In addition to their rigorous 49-week training, cadets of the Officers' Training Academy, St. Thomas Mount, will study for a post-graduate diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies.
Lieutenant General Gautam Banerjee, Commandant of Officers' Training Academy, told reporters on Tuesday that for the first time, the OTA had tied up with the University of Madras to launch the PG diploma course for all trainee officers from this year. The OTA training was wholesome with inputs in military training and education, history, geography, and the PG diploma course, for the first time in military academies training officers, would make the trainees “not just capable officers, but also complete leaders.”
Gopalji Malviya, Head, Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, University of Madras, said the Syndicate had waived the affiliation fee for the course.  He said the university had only granted permission for issuing the PG diploma course certificate, while the course content, syllabus and teaching would be handled by armed forces personnel.
