Awareness of sanitation stressed

CUDDALORE: 

         Awareness of sanitation is yet to catch up with rural women, though welfare schemes have improved their lives, Collector P. Seetharaman has said.

         He was speaking at a workshop on rural development organised by the District Rural Development Agency and the Field Publicity Office at T. Palayam in Kurinjipadi block near here on Thursday. Project Officer (DRDA) G.Veera Raghava Rao said that since open defecation would cause health hazards, rural people should focus on adopting proper hygienic measures.

Roads will be set right before January 31: Cuddalore Collector

CUDDALORE: 

           District Collector P.Seetharaman has set a deadline of January 31 for the contractors to complete the repair works to the roads and water bodies that were damaged in the recent rain and floods.

          Addressing a meeting of contractors and officials here on Monday, the Collector said that besides taking up the repair works on a war-footing they should also ensure the quality of works. They should draw up a schedule for the execution of the works and strictly adhere to it. He also called upon those contractors engaged under the rural road development scheme to speed up the works. The Collector pointed out that the State government had sanctioned Rs 17.67 crore to set right the damaged roads and water bodies. The work orders had already been issued and the works would commence on January 20.

Builder Remanded To Judicial Custody


CUDDALORE: 

         A builder here was remanded to judicial custody on Monday on the charges of forging documents in the construction of permanent houses for the tsunami-affected people.

           Deputy Superintendent of Police G. Stalin told presspersons that the forgery had come to light following a complaint lodged by Srinivasan, Assistant Project Director (Tsunami projects) of the District Rural Development Agency. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package for the tsunami victims, a contract for construction of 125 permanent houses at Periakuppam near here had been awarded to S.V. Rajan (39) of Kondur, proprietor of the Hi-tech Engineering Constructions, Cuddalore.

         As per the government rules, Rajan should produce two bank guarantees for Rs. 10 lakh–Rs. 5 lakh at the time of application and another Rs 5 lakh at the time of allotment of the contract. Accordingly, he produced two receipts on June 14, 2007, and December 17, 2007. However, on verification the receipts were found to be false. Hence, cases were booked against Rajan. The houses were under construction and the case needed further probe to get into the details, Mr Stalin added.
