கடலூர் மாவட்டம், பண்ருட்டி கல்வெட்டு ஆய்வாளர் தமிழரசன் மற்றும் புதுப்பேட்டை கோவிந்தன் ஆகியோர், விருத்தாசலத்தை அடுத்த, 11 கி.மீ., தூரத்தில் முகாச பேரூரில் உள்ள, பெருமாள் கோவிலின் சுற்றுப் பகுதியில் ஆய்வு செய்தனர். அப்போது, தனியாருக்குச் சொந்தமான நிலத்தில், கி.பி.,10ம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சேர்ந்த, சமண தீர்த்தங்கரரின் சிற்பத்தை கண்டு பிடித்தனர்.

இச்சிலையை இப்பகுதி மக்கள் புத்தர் சிலை என்று கூறியும், நம்பியும் வந்துள்ளனர். ஆனால், இது தீர்த்தங்கரர் சிலை என கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. பலகைக் கல்லில் புடைப்பு சிற்பமாக செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இச்சிற்பம், 120 செ.மீ., உயரமும், 92 செ.மீ., அகலமும் கொண்டது. மூக்கும், வாய்ப் பகுதியும் சிதைந்துள்ளன. தீர்த்தங்கரர்களில், 24 பேர் உள்ளனர். இவர்களின் பெயர்களை அறிந்து கொள்ள சிற்பங்களின் கீழ் அவரவர்களுக்கு உரிய சின்னங்கள் இடம் பெற்றிருக்கும். ஆனால், இச்சிற்பத்தில் அடையாளக் குறிகள் எதுவும் தென்படவில்லை.
பீடத்தின் மீது அமர்ந்துள்ளதாகவே படைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தலைக்கு மேல் இருந்த மூக்குடையும், கலசமும் உடைந்துள்ளன. முக்குடையை அலங்கரிப்பது போன்று, வளைவான அசோக மரக்கிளையில் இலைகளும், மலர்களும் காணப்படுகின்றன. தீர்த்தங்கரரின் இருபுறங்களிலும், தேவர்கள், கவரி என்ற சாமரங்களை வீசுவது போன்றும், அதற்கு மேல்புறத்தில் இரண்டு தேவர்கள் கற்பக மலர்களை தூவுவது போன்றும் காணப்படுகிறது. தீர்த்தங்கரரின் தலைக்கு மேல் ஒளிவட்ட வடிவமாக பிரபை காணப்படுகிறது.
தியான நிலையில் அமர்ந்து அறத்தை போதிப்பதாகக் காணப்படும் இச்சிற்பம், கி.பி.,10ம் நூற்றாண்டை சேர்ந்ததாகும். இச்சிற்பத்தின் பீடத்தின் கீழ் தரைப் பகுதியில், எருமை தலை போன்று சிதைந்து காணப்படுவதால், 12வது தீர்த்தங்கரரான வாசு பூஜ்யராக இருக்கலாம் என கருதப்படுகிறது. எனவே, இங்கு இருந்த சமணர் கோவில் அழிந்து, அக்கோவில் கருவறையில் இருந்த சிற்பம் மட்டுமே தற்போது எஞ்சியுள்ளது தெரிய வருகிறது. எஞ்சியுள்ள இந்த சிற்பம் அழியாமலும் அல்லது திருடப்படாமலும் இருக்க, அரசு தொல்லியல் துறையினரால் காக்கப்பட வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு கல்வெட்டு ஆய்வாளர் தமிழரசன் கூறினார்.

அந்தக் கையெழுத்துகள் இணை இயக்குனரின் "பேசிமிலி'யால் (கையெழுத்தைப் போன்றே ரப்பர் ஸ்டாம்பால்) இடப்படுவது வழக்கம். இனி வரும் ஆண்டு முதல் கம்ப்யூட்டர் பிரின்டாகவே கையெழுத்து இடப்பட்டு இருக்கும். இதனால் போலியாக "பேசிமிலி' தயாரித்து வினியோகிப்பதை தவிர்க்க முடியும். மேலும், இதுவரை மதிப்பெண் பட்டியலில் "மீடியம்' குறிப்பிடப்பட்டு இருக்காது. இனி தமிழ், ஆங்கிலம் மீடியம்களுக்கு தனித்தனி மதிப்பெண் பட்டியல் வழங்கப்பட உள்ளது. இது குறித்து கடந்த வாரம் நடந்த தேர்வுத்துறை உயரதிகாரிகள் கூட்டத்தில் ஆலோசனை நடத்தியுள்ளனர்.

திருச்சி அண்ணா தொழில்நுட்ப பல்கலைக்கழக தேர்வுத்துறை கட்டுப்பாட்டு அலுவலர் மதன்குமார் தலைமை தாங்கினார். கல்லூரி புலமுதல்வர் செந்தில்குமார் வரவேற்றார். தனி அலுவலர் வெங்கடேசன் முன்னிலை வகித்தார்.
அண்ணா தொழில்நுட்ப பல்கலைக்கழக பதிவாளர் ராஜா தகவல் முனையத்தை துவக்கி வைத்து பேசுகையில்,
"இணைய தள வசதிகளுடன் தகவல் முனையம் பொதுமக்கள் தேவைக்காக பல்கலைகழகம் துவக்கியுள்ளது. விண்ணப்பங்கள் பெறவும், பூர்த்தி செய்வது உள்ளிட்டவைகள் தகவல்கள் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம்' என்றார்.
Women besiege Cuddalore Municipal Chairman
Residents of Cuddalore demanding free colour television sets from Municipal chairman T.Thangarasu on Monday.

The residents, including women, of certain wards in Cuddalore town on Monday besieged Municipal Chairman T.Thangarasu at his office and demanded free colour television sets.
Shortage of TV sets
The Chairman told them that of the total requirement of 44,000 TV sets the civic body received only 24,000 sets. Therefore, there was a shortage of 20,000 sets that could be fulfilled only after the recent tender procedure initiated by the State government for procuring new TV consignment was completed. In fact, the civic body hoped to withhold the distribution of the TV sets till all the sets were landed.
But apprehensive of the fact that once the schedule for the Assembly elections was announced the Election Commission might prohibit distribution of the TV sets it was decided to give away the TV sets at random to the residents of various wards. If the new consignment arrives after the initiation of the poll process the distribution could be commenced on the pretext that it was only an on-going project and therefore, should not be construed as an inducement to voters.
The Chairman told them that he had written letters to the Municipal Commissioner and District Collector to take appropriate measures for obtaining the adequate number of TV sets and it was up to them to arrange for it. The residents later dispersed.
An uncanny ability with snakes
J.Poonam Chand of Cuddalore is adept in tracking and capturing deadly snakes with the help of a self-made device.

Snakes are scary reptiles whose very sight inspires terror in people. It is the instantaneous reaction of the humans to either run away or kill the snakes.
However, for J. Poonam Chand (41) of Cuddalore, who avidly espouses the cause of animal protection, catching the snakes has become almost an obsession for the past 12–13 years. He says he has attended hundreds of frantic calls from residents to clear their houses and farmlands of snakes as a social service. After the task was accomplished they felt much relieved and profusely thanked him. Even the personnel of the Forest and Fire Service Departments have nothing but praise for him and there have been occasions when Mr Poonam Chand coordinated with them to track the deadly reptiles. He also takes care of wounded cattle heads, stray dogs and hunted down birds like owls and eagles.
The officials of both the departments acknowledgeMr Poonam Chand's humanitarian concern not only for the fellow beings but also for all the living creatures. He is accessible (on cell phone 81486 10679) and attends calls even at midnight. He has an uncanny ability to track the elusive snakes from rooftops, crevices, burrows and bushes. He is familiar with the behaviour of snakes: for instance, when the Russel Viper assumes the zig-zag position, it is readying for attack; the cobra emits a hissing noise from the trachea to warn the assailant and then bares its fangs.
The snakes smell the scent of the prey by shooting out the split tongue and become alert even at the slightest vibration or movement, but they are short of listening ability, Mr Poonam Chand says. He has devised an indigenous tool, comprising the part of cycle handlebar with a break wire running through a PVC pipe operating the forceps at the tip for catching the snakes. He has a wide collection of at least 50 snakes in his house, including the Russel Viper, common krait, bronze back tree snake (komberi mookan), rat snake (saarai which has laid a dozen eggs recently), sand wood viper, black sand bow and so on.
He has been feeding the reptiles with rats. Mr Poonam Chand said that since he has been facing a logistics problem, he is not able to take the snakes to the reserve forests and let them out as required under the law. He is also deterred by the want of means of apprehensions about the wrath of the local people from taking any steps on his own to release the snakes. When contacted, District Forest Officer Duraisamy said that he would make proper arrangements for taking the snakes in Mr Poonam Chand's possession to the reserve forests.
Forest Department sources said that certain snakes, including the cobra, are listed as endangered species in Schedule I of the Wild Life Protection Act 1972 and as such, killing of those species would attract penalties. The snakes are categorised under Schedule 1 (rare but venomous), Schedule 2 (common and less venoumous) and Schedule 3 (non venomous and harmless).
Attack on colony residents a planned one: Samuga Samathuva Padai P.Sivagami

Founder of the Samuga Samathuva Padai P.Sivagami, a former IAS officer, called on the victims of the recent community clash recuperating in the Cuddalore Headquarters Government Hospital here on Monday.
She also visited the Kambalimedu colony to console the residents. She said that the government announced compensation of Rs 1.50 lakh to the family of A.Subramanian, who was murdered in the clash, was inadequate. Subramanian was survived by wife and six children, including five daughters and a son. Hence, the right amount of compensation was to invest Rs 5 lakh in the name of each of the children to take care of their educational requirements, she said.
She sought a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the 20 persons injured in the incident. Stating that only a particular community was singled out, she viewed it as a pre-planned attack carried out with the obvious intention of establishing the authority of one community over the oppressed classes so as to derive political mileage. When she visited the Kambalimedu colony the residents told her that fearing physical harm, they did not send their children to school on Monday because they would have to pass through the streets of the other community. Moreover, the police also did not give them any assurance on safety to school students.
Provide full protection to Tamil Nadu fishermen : Human Rights Protection Centre

The members of the Manitha Urimai Padhukappu Maiyam (Human Rights Protection Centre) staged an agitation in front of the Collectorate here on Monday, seeking full protection to Tamil Nadu fishermen from the Sri Lankan Navy.
District secretary of the Maiyam S.Senthilkumar addressing the gathering said that the Sinhalese fishermen and the Sri Lankan Navy seemed to be taking action against the Tamil Nadu fishermen with a vengeance. Besides losing their catch and fishing nets to the Sinhalese forces the fishermen also faced threat to their lives. Mr. Senthilkumar said that such a situation would not prevail if the Centre acted tough and initiated appropriate steps to curb the atrocities against the fishermen. The Maiyam appealed to the government to grant gun licences to the fishermen as a self-protection measure.
Tsunami houses
L.Mani, a fisherman from Nallavadu, alleged that the permanent houses built for the tsunami-affected families in his place were of substandard quality. The structures looked so fragile because the foundation was not laid as per the government specifications. It seemed that a lot of money had been squandered in this regard and therefore called for a probe by appropriate authority.
Forum appeal to BSNL
CUDDALORE:
The Consumer Guild of Tamil Nadu has appealed to the General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Cuddalore Division, to clear the wait list for broadband in Chidambaram without any delay. In a representation to the BSNL, Guild secretary C.D.Appavu stated that at least 500 customers, seeking broadband connection, in Chidambaram were put on wait list. The BSNL stopped giving broadband connection in August 2010. Mr Appavu further said that any further delay would drive the prospective customers to the private service providers.
