Builder Remanded To Judicial Custody

CUDDALORE:

A builder here was remanded to judicial custody on Monday on the charges of forging documents in the construction of permanent houses for the tsunami-affected people.

Deputy Superintendent of Police G. Stalin told presspersons that the forgery had come to light following a complaint lodged by Srinivasan, Assistant Project Director (Tsunami projects) of the District Rural Development Agency. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package for the tsunami victims, a contract for construction of 125 permanent houses at Periakuppam near here had been awarded to S.V. Rajan (39) of Kondur, proprietor of the Hi-tech Engineering Constructions, Cuddalore.

As per the government rules, Rajan should produce two bank guarantees for Rs. 10 lakh–Rs. 5 lakh at the time of application and another Rs 5 lakh at the time of allotment of the contract. Accordingly, he produced two receipts on June 14, 2007, and December 17, 2007. However, on verification the receipts were found to be false. Hence, cases were booked against Rajan. The houses were under construction and the case needed further probe to get into the details, Mr Stalin added.
