Goodearth Shipbuilding Pvt. Ltd setting up shipyard at Cuddalore

Keeping up with the demand for global trade, Goodearth Shipbuilding Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of GML is setting up a state of the art shipyard at Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India. The shipyard is set to manufacture ships of world class quality, custom made to meet trade requirements. Initially the focus will be on building bulkers. Within the dry bulk segment, the yard will have the capability to build the entire spectrum, ranging from Handysize to Very Large Bulk Carriers (VLBC) with initial plans to build panamax/post panamax vessels.

Silambimangalam Shipyard

Goodearth Shipbuilding Private Limited (GSPL) is planning to develop a shipyard in Silambimangalam, Cuddalore. Development of yard would be done in Phases, in line with the market and economic conditions. In Phase 1, the shipyard would process 50,000 Tons of steel and would deliver two ships per annum starting from March 2012. Capacity expansion up to 500,000 tons of processed steel is envisioned in subsequent years with setting up of additional fabrication facilities within the proposed yard as per the master plan developed with Korean Shipbuilding experts

The shipyard will be backed by an in-house ship-design team, which combined with an experienced shipbuilding set up, will make the yard - a lean and flexible unit, best suited for the post-recession economic environment. Post recession, changed market and economic conditions do not support large volume production of ships, as there is surplus in all existing segments. More commonly reported as 'supply glut', this is going to remain for some time and the customer will have a strong position. He will seek more value in his assets and will get more specific in his requirements with respect to design and sizes while placing new orders

This would require flexibility in terms of ship design, size and production schedules for the shipyard. However most of the shipyards across Korea and Japan are suitable for volume production and have little flexibility. These are capital intensive shipyards, which require producing many ships to justify their high capital and operating cost. A small versatile yard is more suited to present conditions and we look forward to position ourselves here.

In present conditions it is possible to procure equipments and set up a facility at a reasonable cost. The yard will build vessels using small blocks, thus reducing the requirement of large and costly manufacturing and handling equipments. Also, with reduced throughput requirement of two ships per year, and use of 'load out' system as launching facility, financial requirement for civil structure like outfitting jetties and breakwater is substantially reduced.

Most of the outfitting job would be completed before launching; therefore time required by the ship at jetty would be minimal. All this will result in low capital load, for ships being produced at this yard. Thus, Silambimangalam yard will be able to produce reliable and good quality ships at reasonable price and would offer its customers, required customization as deemed fit for their needs.
