Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam opened the sluices of the Wellingdon dam to release 340 cusecs of water for irrigation on Thursday.
He said that owing to repair works carried out on the dam, water could not be stored for the past few years. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had sanctioned a sum of Rs. 29.71 crore to strengthen the bunds to a length of 800 metres. As the dam had now become fit for storing water, the level was kept at 24 ft. The water release on Thursday would benefit 10,084 acres of farmlands in the ayacut areas. Steps would be taken to gradually raise the height to 29.72 ft, and after completion of such works, the ayacut areas could be extended up to 24,000 acres, covering a total of 61 villages.
Mr. Panneerselvam also said that to take permanent flood control measures, the Chief Minister had earmarked Rs. 301 crore to Cuddalore district, out of which Rs. 108 crore would be utilised for the reinforcement of the Kollidam bank. During a Cabinet meeting held recently in Chennai, it was decided to desilt the course of the Vellar, the Uppanar and the Paravanar and strengthen their banks, the Minister said. A sum of Rs. 38 crore had been sanctioned for undertaking repair works on rain-damaged Vepur-Vriddhachalam road and Mangalore-Thittakudi road. The works would be taken up soon, the Minister said.
