Party meetings under EC scanner

CUDDALORE:

Along with the issue of poll notification, the Election Commission has tightened vigil on political meetings in private as well public places in Cuddalore district from Saturday, according to P. Seetharaman, District Election Officer (DEO).

He told TheHindu that political parties were at liberty to conduct workers' meeting in their party offices. But, if it is to be held either on private premises or in marriage halls/community halls, the parties should take permission three days prior to the meeting. If any meal is served on those occasions, the expenditure on this count would be added to the poll expenditure of the candidates concerned. The entire proceedings would be recorded by a video surveillance team. The parties should also obtain permission three days before organising any public meetings or taking out processions.

The DEO further said that hoisting of party flags in public places was banned, but candidates and partymen could put up flags in their houses. However, for putting up flags in temporary party offices, permission ought to be obtained. He also stated that cars and other campaign vehicles should not sport party flags, handbills or posters without permission and if any violation is noticed in this regard, cases would be booked. Mr. Seetharaman further said that all aspiring candidates should open bank accounts without fail.

Bank accounts

The accounts can be opened with banks located within the constituencies (recommendatory and not mandatory) concerned as it would make verification of transactions easy. The candidates were required to maintain the expenditure registrar and cash registrar (making entries of the funds received), Mr. Seetharaman added.
