Instilling hope in people with the almanac

CUDDALORE:

The public reading of Almanac on Tamil New Year (on the first day of Chithirai month) has been very much in vogue in Cuddalore. It is an occasion for the people to get together and discuss what is in store for the State as well as for the individuals in the next 12 months. It provides an occasion to go beyond the confines of selfishness and relate oneself with nature and the well being of the society.

For instance, Tamil New Year “Kara,” occupying the 25th place in the 60-year cycle of Tamil calendar dawned at 11.37 a.m on Thursday as per the Suththa Vakkiya Panchangam and 1 p.m. as per the Thiru Kanidha Panchangam. The term “panchangam” refers to five important aspects such as thidhi (phase of the moon), vaaram (week days), natchathiram (birth stars), yogam and karanam that influence one's behavior.

The Almanac reading usually takes place in the places of worship, community halls and in the association premises. On Thursday, president of the Manjakuppam chapter of the Tamil Nadu Brahmin's Association K.Thirumalai organized one such almanac reading here. R.Sethumadhavan, who took up the responsibility of reading the almanac, said that the New Year will bring copious rains and prosperity to the people. There would be good governance and prices of essential commodities would be brought under control.

However, there would be outbreak of diseases afflicting cattle heads, reducing the milk yield. Though war clouds would gather in the neighbourhood of the country these would be dissipated by the right handling of the rulers. The year ahead would be good for those born under the influence of Leo and Sagittarius, while others would have mixed fortunes. Mr Sethumadhavan however said that no day could be termed as totally auspicious or inauspicious.

It would be better to study the above mentioned five aspects in one's birth chart before embarking upon any new ventures. About the relevance of almanac reading in the modern era, Mr Sethumadhavan said that it was the perpetuation of tradition, customs and culture. It was not only a question of belief but a scientific evaluation of the elements and the characteristics of human beings. “In fact, the almanac reading is meant to instill hope among the people as they have a future to look forward to, and therefore, it is a positive engagement, “ he said.
