Nabard sanctions Fund for Manimuktha river Project in Cuddalore district

         National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned Rs 765 crore to Tamil Nadu, as part of Rural Infrastructure Development Fund for 2011-12. The funds would be used to execute infrastructure projects in various sectors covering drinking water, irrigation and rural connectivity.

           In a press statement, Nabard said the assistance includes an amount of Rs 226 crore, sanctioned for the first time, exclusively for creating warehousing infrastructure by establishing 1,281 godowns with a total storage capacity of 434,000 tonnes.These godowns will be established at select regulated markets, primary agricultural co-operative societies (PACS), agricultural produce co-operative marketing societies (APCMS) and taluk headquarters of civil supplies corporation all over the state. An amount of Rs 157 crore has been sanctioned for a project which will provide drinking water supply to four unions in Madurai district involving 753 rural habitations.

          This proposal is a part of Melur combined drinking water supply scheme being implemented by the Tamil Nadu government. On completion, the project will provide 40 lpcd assured drinking water supply to 626,000 rural population. An amount of Rs 64 crore has been sanctioned for improving 9 old anicuts in Amaravathy river system in Karur district, rehabilitating Virudhachalam anicut across Manimuktha river in Cuddalore district, constructing check dam across river Cauvery near Kambarasampettai in Trichy district and modernising Melmangalam supply channel in Theni district. On completion, these projects are expected to benefit an ayacut area of 14,575 hectares.

        An amount of Rs 318 crore has been sanctioned for reconstruction of 68 distressed rural bridges in 18 districts, widening and strengthening of 442 rural roads in 228 town panchayats and 330 village roads in 30 districts in the state. On completion, Nabard said these projects would benefit 2,262 villages covering 380,800 rural population.
