Cuddalore district to soon get cyber cells

Cyber crime wings will be set up soon in each of the six districts in the north police zone.

Inaugurating a three-day training programme on cyber crime investigations for 36 police officers from the six districts on Sunday, C Sylendra Babu, inspector-general, north zone said each unit would be headed by a deputy-superintendent of police and six constables.

The units would be set up in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Villupuram soon. "These trained policemen will work on cyber crime cases," Babu said. Experts from the Cyber Society of India and NASSCOM would conduct a training programme for officers from the six districts, he said. "Soon we will get a separate complaint number for cyber crime," Babu said.

He added that hundreds of cases had been solved with the help of cyber crime experts. "Last year alone, over 2,100 cases, including murder, murder for gain and kidnap, were detected with the help of cyber cell technicians," he said. "Many complaints about online lotteries, online job offers, obscene calls, and hoax bomb threats have unnecessarily created trouble for families," he said.
