Cuddalore Students spending their exam holidays for local body election

CUDDALORE:

While every other student is spending their exam holidays in leisure, some have taken the initiative to help their friend’s father, who is contesting for a ward member post, in the local body election.

S Karthikeyan, father of a Class nine student K Kaviya Arasan, is contesting from ward number eight in Cuddalore Municipality for the Congress party. It was Kaviya and his seven friends who took up the duty of spreading the message of the arrival of Union Minister GK Vasan in Cuddalore on Sunday evening. They disseminated the message to the residents by using loudspeakers attached to an auto.

The children began their canvassing on October 3 after Karthikeyan was announced as the Congress candidate. They are also campaigning for AS Chandrasekaran who is a chairman candidate. These students, who are not even eligible to vote, said they are doing this only for the reason of friendship and not for money. R Anandhan, a student, said, “Many people are campaigning for money. But we are campaigning merely for the sake of friendship and without expecting anything from my friend. Friendship is above money.”

The group hired an auto and has been canvassing 10 am to 5 pm everyday during the holidays. “We have decided to spend our holidays in campaigning for my classmate’s father as he is very close to all of us. During free time we play together at Kaviya Arasan’s house. His father knows us well,” said S Revinkumar and G Ajay, schoolmates of Kaviya Arasan. Karthikeyan, congress candidate, said, “They have been coming to my house every day and are very close to my son. They do not know much about politics and moreover they may not have any knowledge of how politics work. But they are doing this solely because of friendship. ”

In most of the campaigns it is very common to see people campaigning for certain parties because of leaders or ideologies or caste or money but in this case it is rather surprising to see how the children value their friendship.
