Fishermen's post-holiday hopes hardly shore up catch in Cuddalore

In straits: Fishermen in Cuddalore are a worried lot.

CUDDALORE:

Fishermen of Cuddalore district are a worried lot because they are unable to get a sizeable catch even after the 45-day fishing holiday. Usually, they reap rich harvest in the beginning of June, comprising heterogeneous varieties. However, this time their expeditions are as good as dry runs.

The Cuddalore Port area, the major fish landing yard, is getting only sardines which have low market value. This variety is much sought after by traders in Kerala, who, in turn, send them to upcountry markets. The sardines fetch good dividends only to bulk buyers whereas the fishermen would have to be content with lesser income. Locally, a limited quantity of the sardines are converted into dry fish

Even the sardines are said to be sparsely populated now and therefore, the fishermen affected by the difference in money they spend on fuel and returns they get. Some of the fishermen in the Cuddalore Port area were lucky to get a prize catch in “rays fish” (thirukkai in Tamil) weighing 75 kg on Thursday. It is said to be having medicinal value and hence, would fetch high price.

A.Amirthalingam of Thazhanguda told The Hindu that soon after the fishing ban was lifted, the fishermen went to the sea with great expectations of bringing ashore large quantity of fish. But, their expectations were belied as they could get only homogenous variety, that too in lesser quantity. Experience had shown that after the ban period, the sea would be replete with kaleidoscopic varieties of fishes, including high-end varieties such as “seer” (vanjiram in Tamil) and prawn.

Mr. Amirthalngam, a seasoned fisherman, said that the depletion in shoals of fishes could be attributed mainly to two reasons - the direction of underwater current, and indiscriminate usage of the “purse seine nets.” He regretted that extensive use of the purse seine nets had depleted the marine sources because these nets would have a deeper reaches to scoop up even the hatchlings. Mr. Amirthalingam was apprehensive that if such a trend continued, fish would go dear for the consumption of even the coastal community. Fisheries Department sources said that strong winds blowing on the high seas had caused the rolling up of fishing nets. The catch would be fairly good only in the widespread net and not in the curled up one. The sources further said that usage of purse seine nets was banned.

According to Mr. Amirthalingam, only solace for the fishermen was that the State government had enhanced the compensation for the fishing holiday period from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,000 per family.

A endeavour full of risks

Onerous task:Repair works on FRP boats progress at Thazhanguda in Cuddalore.

CUDDALORE:

The fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) boats fitted with outboard engines are mostly used for ferrying the fish catch from the trawlers to the fish landing ports. Since these boats would have to be berthed close to the big vessels in the mid-sea, they always get the beating. Hence, the hulls and rims of the boats are vulnerable to constant friction, and, wear and tear.

But in a busy season the fishermen are left with little time to attend to the repair works. Therefore, they chose to set right the boats during fishing holidays, spread over 45 days. Restoring the damaged FRP boats is the job of skilled technicians. But not many such technical hands are around in Cuddalore and they have to be scouted for either at Marakkanam or at Nagapattinam. According to E. Lenin (49), a technician from Marakkanam, the FRP boats need careful handling. The dented and broken spots ought to be covered with shiny mats woven with glass filaments.

Hazardous to health

Inhaling the gossamer filament is hazardous to health. Moreover, the filaments have razor sharp edges that would leave nicks in the hands, if carelessly handled. Depending upon the requirements, the mats are placed in layers with help of a binding agent or resin. A catalyst and accelerator should also be used for easy fixing of the glass fibre mats. Here too, caution is required as the mixture of the catalyst and the accelerator will explore if the proportion is not right.

Mr Lenin said that the technicians learn the techniques the hard way, either from their peers or through trial-and-error method. After the mats are spread evenly at the required spots, the resin mixture is be applied with a paint brush. Soon, the mats indistinguishably merge with the surface of the boats which are then allowed to dry in sunlight for some time. Afterwards the surface is smoothened with electrically operated grinder discs.

While taking up this job, the technicians have to wear goggles and cover the nose and mouth with a cloth to guard against inhaling the fine dust and splinters. Mr Lenin said that though a single layer of glass fibre mat might give a silken appearance, when layered, it acquires great strength to withstand the load and pressure. After giving a coat of fluorescent paint the FRPs would be made seaworthy again. The repair cost depends upon the extent of damage. The technicians bargained their pay package as the work might take two days to one week to complete.

Spreading the net in tough times

CUDDALORE:

Though deepsea fishing by heavy motorised boats and trawlers has been prohibited for 45 days during April and May, fishermen are venturing into the sea in fibre boats fitted with outboard engines for a distance of about six to seven km from the shore.

They are doing so at their own risk, or in other words, most probably they cannot get adequate fish in shallow waters that would take care of the expenses incurred on fuel and wages to be paid to the helping hands, leave alone making profits. Since the fishermen are accustomed to taking fish meal every day, it is near impossible for them to modify their culinary habit for such a “long period.” Hence, at least, for catering to local needs they would have to carry on the fishing activity, on a small scale.

According to K. Manoharan (37), a fisherman at Thazhanguda, the fish catch has dwindled in the past few months. What they get in their fishing nets are mostly sardines (“mathi”) that are least in demand locally. Therefore, this variety is being sent to the fishing yards for making “dry fish” that verily reduces the value of the catch. For catching this type of fish, only gill nets are being used and these nets could be spread for a distance of five to six km.

The texture of the gill net is such that it can hold only small fishes, while the bigger ones would nip through it. Mr. Manoharan says that usually fishermen go in groups of five to ten boats, and off sea, they almost position themselves in a row. The occurrence of shoals of fish could be sighted from at least two to three km by experienced fishermen. Frolicking fishes or those jumping in and out of water would also betray the whereabouts of their kind, he says.

. Murugesan of Thevanampattinam says that the direction of the wind is also the indicator for assessing the fish occurrence. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, through satellite imaging, also helps fishermen in locating the fish breeding places. He says that for the whole of last year, the wind was not favourable and, therefore, the fish catch was less than the yearly average.
