Track vendors make brisk business in Cuddalore

CUDDALORE:

It is a common sight at the Lawrence Road level-crossing here that vendors, mostly elderly women, are carrying on their trade right on the railway track and in the vicinity.

They are selling seasonal fruits, flowers, other eatables and even small household articles at the level-crossing. Hence, they have come to acquire a new name “track vendors.” When the gauge conversion work was under way they readily pitched their tents there for over a year and even after its completion and restoration of train services they would not budge from the place.

A woman vendor who put up the shop selling earthen lamps and stringed flowers in between the two tracks on Thursday was quite nonchalant in her attitude towards the resumption of train services. She claimed that after all only limited train services were being operated through this section and that too at scheduled timings. Since the vendors do not have very many things at their disposal they could easily bundle up their wares whenever they hear the signal for closing the level-crossing gates. After the trains pass through they would again occupy their previous positions.
