Compensation for injured students in Cuddalore


Chief Educational officer S. Amudhavalli giving away compensation to a student injured in a recent road accident, in Cuddalore on Wednesday.

CUDDALORE: 

           Chief Educational Officer S. Amudhavalli on Wednesday gave away compensation of Rs. 50,000 each to 10 students, who are undergoing treatment in a private hospital here for injuries sustained in a recent road accident.

         The compensation was given from the funds provided by the Nagarjuna Oil Corporation Ltd. (NOCL) and the van operator, owning moral responsibility for the accident that occurred at Semmanguppam, in which four girl students were killed and 17 students were injured.

          Following a series of agitations staged by local residents demanding compensation from the oil company and the vehicle operator, Collector P. Seetharaman mediated the conciliatory talks and it was agreed upon to pay a solatium of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the four victims. The company and the vehicle operator also agreed to pay the medical expenses of the injured students, over and above the expenditure incurred on them through the Kalaignar Health Scheme. The students who got the compensation are T. Kalaiselvi, M. Mahalakshmi, I. Priyadarsihini, M. Sathya, G. Kunal, L. Anbarasan, S. Jayasudhan, L. Ramadevi, L. Lakshmidevi and A. Rajeshkumar.

          Ms. Amudhavalli told The Hindu that the Education Department had instructed the schools concerned to grant special leave for those students and exempt them from writing the half-early examinations. The schools had been asked to waive tuition fees and also provide the students free education till they complete the schooling, she said. NOCL general manager A.G. Sankar and Thiruchopuram panchayat president P. Ravisankar were present.
