Now, an SMS on road safety

CUDDALORE:

From January 1, the Transport Department has been conducting several programmes as part of the Road Safety Week celebrations in Cuddalore district.

Besides taking out awareness rallies and conducting meetings, the department has planned to send SMS on traffic rules and safe driving. The department has coined slogans for SMS such as “Road safety is a mission, not an intermission,” “Road safety is life safety,” and “Observe traffic rules and avoid accidents.”

The week-long programme was charted out by Regional Transport Officer M. Jayasankaran on the direction of Collector P. Seetharaman and under the guidance of Transport Commissioner M. Rajaram. The programme began on January 1 with a rally in which school students, trainee drivers, automobile dealers and officials participated. On January 2, the officials conducted vehicle inspection to check if the operators were adhering to norms on load limit and number of passengers. The officials also pasted reflectors on the rear side of the vehicles.

Motor vehicle inspectors Kannan and Saravanan spoke on road safety to maxi-cab and the tourist taxi operators on Beach Road here. On January 4, free eye camp was conducted at the RTO office for those who had applied for learner's licence, licence, and renewal of licence. On January 5, the officials conducted an awareness meeting with college students.
