Madras High Court Judge Elipe Dharma Rao giving away a cheque to a beneficiary at the Mega Lok Adalat held in Cuddalore on Saturday.

Madras High Court Judge Elipe Dharma Rao distributed cheques amounting to over Rs. 7.54 crore towards settlement of 625 motor accident claim cases, resolved through Lok Adalat in Cuddalore on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Judge, who is also the executive chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, Chennai, said the Lok Adalat, made its advent in Gujarat in 1982 and held its first sitting in Chennai in 1986. During 2010, a total of six mega Lok Adalats were held in the State, in which 6,604 of 29,029 bank-related cases were resolved and over Rs. 42.05 crore was recovered. As regards motor accident claim cases (M.C.O.P cases – Motor Claims Tribunal Original Petitions), the Judge favoured adopting a humanitarian approach and organising more such district-wise Lok Adalats for speedy resolution of the claim cases.
High Court Judge K.N. Basha called upon the police to register First Information Report without any delay and report the cases to the Legal Services Authority. Another High Court Judge R.Mala said accident claim cases were mounting at the rate of 250 every month. Through Lok Adalat, these cases could be settled across the board and speedy compensation given to the victims' families. Collector P.Seetharaman said that Cuddalore had become an accident-prone district. Therefore, he was reviewing preventive and curative aspects on a regular basis.
