CUDDALORE:
India with more than 35 per cent of its population below the age of 25 will become the hub of knowledge in the coming years. Its manpower will become the human resource bank for the world, said M.Ramanathan, Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University.
He was speaking at the 17th annual convocation of St. Joseph's College of Arts and Science here on Saturday. Mr. Ramanathan said that as per the statistics in 1950, there were 20 universities and 700 colleges, with a student and teacher strength of 20,000 and 2,000 respectively. In 2010, the number of universities had risen to 500, colleges 24,000, students 16 million and teachers five lakh. For the projected student strength of 46 million, the number of universities should go up to 800 and colleges 35,000 to 40,000.As a doctor, he would say that the medical fraternity and hospitals were concentrated in urban centres. For taking healthcare to grassroots level, there was a need for more doctors, he said.
