Four people were killed and 11 others injured when the van in which they were travelling dashed against a roadside tree and overturned near Alapakkam railway gate on the Cuddalore-Chidambaram road in last night.
Police said a group of 20 people from Keezhpoovani Kuppam village were proceeding to attend a house-warming ceremony at Vazhutalampattu village when the incident occurred. When the vehicle neared the Alapakkam railway gate, the van driver lost control and rammed the vehicle into a tamarind tree.
In the impact, the vehicle overturned, crushing three people -- Suresh, Moorthy and Ilamtherian -- to death on the spot. Twelve people who had sustained injuries were admitted to Cuddalore Government Hospital. One of them Thavamani died while he was being shifted to a Puducherry hospital for treatment.
