Former transport minister and DMK candidate in Trichy west assembly by-election, K N Nehru, who was released from Cuddalore prison on bail on Monday night after 45 days in custody, chose to stay away from campaigning on the last day of electioneering for the October 13 bypolls on Tuesday.
Nehruas release from the jail followed Trichy judicial magistrate V Maheswari Banurekhaas refusal to extend his remand. His brother K N Ramajayam and Trichy deputy mayor M Anbazhagan were also released on Monday. Amidst reports that police were planning to arrest him again, Nehru did not surface in Trichy on Tuesday. He met DMK president M Karunanidhi at the Chennai railway station on Tuesday morning and sought his blessings. Later, he went through a health check-up at a private hospital in Chennai and since then there is no trace of him. Meanwhile, the government filed a revision petition before the Madurai bench of the Madras high court to set aside the lower court order. Court has served notice on Nehru. asThe governmentas idea is to keep Nehru on his toes until the first phase of the local body elections are over on October 17,a? charged one of the lawyers appearing for him.
The first by-election since the AIADMK came to power is special to both the arch-rivals, the DMK and AIADMK. The DMK is banking on the 30% Muslim population in the segment. It is hoping against hope that Muslims will ditch the AIADMK for not fielding a member of that community in the place of late Mariam Pitchai. It also seeks to capitalize on the DMDKas walking out of the AIADMK camp. It may be noted that Pitchai had managed a lead of just 7,179 votes in the last polls.
On the contrary, Jayalalithaa had won with a comfortable margin of 41,848 votes in the neighboring Srirangam constituency. K N Nehruas losing margin was the lowest among all the nine seats in the district, seven of which were captured by the AIADMK. Out of the remaining two, one went to the DMDK, and another to the DMK. In the campaign, the DMK is focusing on the asvindictivea? politics of the AIADMK government. Though the DMK cadres were all set make it a sort of victory parade on Monday evening when K N Nehru was granted bail, their enthusiasm was doused by the delay in his release. Also, his going underground on Tuesday is a dampener.
DMK Rajya Sabha MP, T M Selvaganapathy who is part of Stalinas entourage in the electioneering, told TOI that Nehru did not appear in public because he would be required to appear in the court any time.
