Parangipettai judicial magistrate extended till January 28

The Cuddalore principal district sessions court Monday extended till January 28 its interim stay on the non-bailable warrant issued by the Parangipettai judicial magistrate court against chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Judge K. Uthirapathy posted the next hearing to January 28 when the court is expected to pronounce its verdict on the NBW issued against Ms Jayalalithaa by a lower court. The matter relates to a case filed by the returning officer of Bhuvanagiri Assembly segment against Ms Jayalalithaa for filing nominations from more than one constituency.

Former DMK MP C. Kuppusamy had moved the Madras high court seeking action against Jayalalithaa. The court had directed Election Commission to file cases in appropriate courts. Jayalalithaa moved the Supreme Court which stayed the proceedings. However, Parangipettai judicial magistrate Gomathy ordered for the issue of a non-bailable warrant against Jayalalithaa for her non-appearance in court. She had stayed the NBW but did not exempt Jayalalithaa from personal experience. When the case came up for hearing on January 4 the magistrate insisted on Jayalalithaa’s presence. Chief minister’s counsel A. Sankaran of Tindivanam moved the principal district sessions court and obtained an interim stay.
