Collector P. Seetharaman has called upon political parties and leaders to extend full cooperation for the peaceful conduct of elections. He was speaking at an all-party meeting held at the District Development Council Hall here on Thursday.
The Collector, along with Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis, briefed them on the model code of conduct and directed them to remove banners from all over the district within 24 hours. Political parties should conduct public meetings only at the designated places and get prior permission from law enforcing authorities. The campaigns should not go beyond 10 p.m. Political leaders should scrupulously adhere to the Election Commission guidelines.
Earlier, the Collector and the Superintendent of Police convened a meeting of polling officials and police officers to give them an elaborate account of the poll process. The SP told station officers to put up noticeboards in their respective police stations listing out the places notified for public meetings. The Collector said that the officials had taken an oath to conduct the elections in a free and fair manner. It was, therefore, their bounden duty to act in accordance to the oath.
In the evening, the Collector opened a media centre at the Collectorate, meant to disseminate information on election process. He told presspersons that 354 gun licence holders had been instructed to surrender their weapons at the respective police stations till the poll process was completed.
