Liquor, biryani and cash seized in Cuddalore District

CUDDALORE:

In continuation of the “search-and-seize operation,” officials seized liquor bottles, biryani packets and cash (meant for distribution to voters) from various places in Cuddalore district on Monday.

In a statement released here, Collector P. Seetharaman said that based on a tip-off, Vriddhachalam Revenue Divisional Officer Murugesan and tahsildar Saravanan searched the house of M. Kamaraj of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam located on the Tiruchi-Chennai road junction at Vepur and found 162 liquor bottles worth Rs. 12,340 and Rs. 15,960 unaccounted cash.

The officials took possession of both liquor and cash and filed a case at the Vepur police station. The salesman of a TASMAC retail outlet at Vepur was placed under suspension for having sold liquor in bulk, ignoring the direction of polling officials. At Chidambaram, a flying squad led by Thirunavukkarasu, based on a tip-off that voters were bribed at C. Vakkiramari, searched the house of Chakkaravarthi, president of C. Vakkiramari panchayat and owing allegiance to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. They seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs. 20,000.

Vriddhachalam Municipal Commissioner seized 2,000 chicken biryani packets kept ready at an oil mill in Indira Nagar (Vriddhachalam) to be distributed among supporters of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam. The Collector said that the expenditure incurred on this score would be added to the poll account of DMDK candidate V. Muthukumar.
