CUDDALORE:
Cuddalore MP K.S.Alagiri has appealed to Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa to resume train services that were earlier operated on the metre gauge section but later withdrawn after gauge conversion in this region.
In a representation, Mr. Alagiri said that since there was no proper road transport facility between Sengottai and Chennai, people were expecting the Sengottai-Chennai Express service to be resumed via Thanjavur, Chidambaram and Cuddalore. He also called upon the Minister to arrange for the resumption of the Mayiladuthurai-Bengaluru service via Chidambaram, Cuddalore and Vriddhachalam, which was discontinued after the gauge conversion work was taken up.
Similarly, he sought the re-introduction of the Mayiladuthurai-Chennai Express to be run through Chidambaram and Cuddalore. Mr. Alagiri also called for introduction of train service in the Tiruchi-Bengaluru section via Vriddhachalam during summer. Such a train service was in vogue last summer but cancelled in the current season. Mr. Alagiri also pointed out that the train service operating between Madurai and Tirupati did not stop at the Chidambaram junction.
Residents of Chidambaram were disappointed that such a train linking important centres did not halt at the temple town. Traders, students, businessmen and pilgrims were hoping that after gauge conversion more number of trains would be introduced. However, their hopes were belied because even the usual train services were either cancelled or run without halt in any of the stations in Cuddalore, Mr. Alagiri said.
