Ramalinga Adigalar has done yeoman service to humanity, Tamil: Finance Minister

CUDDALORE:

Ramalinga Adigalar, popularly known as Vallalar, has done a yeoman service to humanity and Tamil language. His Tamil diction was of extraordinary quality, unparalleled by any other scholars, said K. Anbazhagan, Finance Minister.

He was speaking at a function held at the Sathya Gnana Sabai at Vadalur near here on Saturday. Mr. Anbazhagan said that through his life Vallalar had demonstrated how one could achieve immortality by serving the society. Peace and harmony could prevail only when the heart was filled with love and non-violence. The concept of god was universal and therefore could not be confined to the teachings and ideologies of any particular community or religion.

Mr. Anbazhagan further said that Vallalar's holistic thoughts were all comprehensive, intended for the good of all creations on the earth. He strongly advocated that humanity should not only learn to live in harmony but should also show compassion to animals and plants. Having realised that hunger was a debilitating force that led to other conflicts Vallalar had started mass feeding by setting up a kitchen that was working round-the-clock.

The preaching of Vallalar got reflected in the rationality of Periyar Ramasamy, ahimsa of Mahatma Gandhi and humaneness of Mother Teresa. The Thiruvarutpa and Thiruvasagam were the treasure troves, containing the valuable guidance for streamlining thoughts and action for creating a better society. In this context the Minister said that there was nothing wrong in reciting Tamil verses in the places of worship built by Tamil kings. However, the influence of other languages in religion had become deeply entrenched.

It was owing to the strivings of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and, the cooperation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi that Tamil could attain the classical language status, Mr. Anbazhagan added. On the occasion he inaugurated the new hall erected in front of the Sathya Gnana Sabai, released low-cost Thiruvarutpa books, and, laid foundation stones for the construction of a mandapam at Puthu Mariamman temple and building for the Block Development Officer at Kurinjipadi. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Hindu Religious and Cultural Endowment Minister Periyakaruppan, K.S. Alagiri, MP, and others participated.
