CUDDALORE:

Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam inaugurated the “Jawaharlal Nehru science” exhibition on the premises of St.Joseph's higher secondary school at Thirupadiripuliyur here on Monday.

The Minister said that in the two-day expo being organised by the Education Department, 83 schools had displayed a total of 304 exhibits. He called upon the students to visit the exhibition to improve their scientific knowledge. The Minister further said that on the educational front, the DMK government had launched many pioneering schemes. In the erstwhile AIADMK regime, the teacher posts had become untenable but now the incumbent government had filled all the vacancies for teachers and had also given a salary hike to them.

On an average, 57,74,673 eggs were being given daily to students through the 42,824 nutrition meal centres and another 11,26,534 eggs daily through the 54,439 anganwadis in the State. Mr. Panneerselvam said that after the number of eggs given to students had been increased from three to five a week there was a significant improvement in their health aspects and this had in turn enabled them to perform well in their studies. Besides this, 90 per cent of the works on the construction of additional classrooms for schools in Cuddalore district, undertaken by the “Education for All” scheme, was completed and these would be ready for occupation by the end of this year. The Minister evinced keen interest in the exhibits, particularly the one in which a school student demonstrated how a cellphone could be charged by rotating a cycle wheel.

It worked on a simple mechanism: that is, the dynamo being operated by the rotation of wheel would generate power from which the cellphone could be charged. On the occasion, the Minister also felicitated the teachers who had bagged the National and State-level awards in appreciation of their services. District Collector P.Seetharaman, G.Aiyappan and D.Ravikumar, MLAs, Municipal Chairman T.Thangarasu, Vice-Chairman P.Thamaraiselvan, Chief Educational Officer S.Amudhavalli, District Educational Officer R.Bharathamani, St.Joseph school Principal Fr. Arokkianathan and others participated.
