CUDDALORE:
The Veeranam tank will be deepened by 1.5 feet at a cost of Rs. 16 crore to increase its storage capacity and avert flood damage downstream, according to Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam.
He inspected the flood-affected areas at Chidambaram on Friday, along with Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, MLA D. Ravikumar, and Collector P. Seetharaman. The Minister gave away crop insurance amounting to Rs. 2.68 crore to 11,646 farmers, who lost their crops in floods last year.
Giving an account of flood damage in Cuddalore district, Mr. Panneerselvam said that the recent spell of rain had killed six persons and 86 cattle heads, and submerged standing crops on over 51,000 hectares, including 49,300 ha of agricultural crops and 1,800 ha of horticultural crops. A total of 1,454 huts were fully damaged and 10,265 partly damaged. So far, 4,43,320 food packets had been distributed among flood-affected people.
Mr. Panneerselvam said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those killed in rain-related incidents, Rs. 5,000 for fully damaged houses and Rs. 2,000 for partly damaged houses. He also said that a new project was on the anvil to divert excesses from the Karuvattu Odai to the Kollidam. A sum of Rs. 301 crore had been sanctioned for putting in place permanent flood control measures, he added.
