The proposal of the Panruti Municipality to pull down a place of worship met with strong protest from residents, on Tuesday.
Police sources said that the civic body had found the temple posing hurdle to widening of a link road at Panruti. Moreover, it would also obstruct the execution of a drainage project. Hence, the municipality had decided to demolish the temple. When excavators were mobilised for the purpose, residents gathered in large numbers urging the authorities to spare the temple. When they refused to budge from the place, municipal commissioner Arunachalam, municipal engineer Sumathi Selvi, DSP Prasannakumar, went to the spot and pacified the people.
