Starting of distance education system, establishing new colleges at Tirupattur in Vellore district and Kallakurichi in Villupuram district and taking up the phase-II construction works are among the future plans of Thiruvalluvar University, according to A. Jothi Murugan, Vice-Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University.
Presenting the annual report at the sixth Annual Convocation of the university on Monday, he said the Thiruvalluvar Institute of Distance Education will be started in the academic year 2011-2012.
“Two new constituent colleges will be started at Tirupattur in Vellore district and Kallkurichi in Villupuram district with financial assistance from the Central and State governments from the academic year 2011-2012,” he said.
Necessary plans will be drafted and implemented to obtain the several financial benefits being provided by the University Grants Commission, he said. “Steps to start the phase-II construction work of the university will be taken up soon,” he added. The V-C said immediate supplementary examinations for all arts and science colleges affiliated to the university was launched during this academic year. A total of 3,060 students appeared for the examinations. Owing to this, the undergraduate stream accounted for a pass percentage of 79 per cent, while it was 80 per cent for postgraduate students, he pointed out.
Referring to research programmes at the university, he said the number of Ph.D scholars and M.Phil students had increased from last year. The university has also introduced a course on soft skills from this academic year at the affiliated colleges to enhance the soft skills of undergraduate students. Mr. Murugan noted that the Thiruvalluvar University Arts and Science College and Postgraduate extension centre was started at Villupuram district last year and was functioning with 235 students in five undergraduate programmes. The PG extension centre had four programmes. Meanwhile, the Thiruvalluvar University Arts and Science College was started at Tiruvannamalai district and was functioning with 243 students in five undergraduate programmes.
Delivering the convocation address, former secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu A.M. Swaminathan, said around six per cent of students, who join schools, are able to complete college education in India. He stressed on the need for hard work among students. Mr. Swaminathan elaborated on the need for time management, knowledge of the world, overcoming obstacles and sense of humour among students among other qualities. On the occasion, degrees were awarded to a total of 23,129 students – 20,280 UG, 2,204 PG, 615 M.Phil and 30 Ph.D.
