A campaign to create awareness among voters apace in Cuddalore.
CUDDALORE:
Even as parties battle it out for the coming elections, the Election Commission has launched a campaign for the Assembly elections, but with a difference.
While the political parties are seeking votes for their respective candidates and symbols, the Election Commission is trying to impress upon the voters to discharge their democratic duty of casting votes, as per their conscience, Elecwithout fail. The timings of the poll campaign applicable to the political parties also apply to the awareness campaign which has to be wound up by 10 p.m.
The officialdom has roped in a galaxy of actors, including Suriya, Karthi, Rohini, Suhasini and Jayam Ravi, and sportspersons such as Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to drive home the message through a video programme being screened in the van belonging to the information and publicity wing at public places.
Titled ‘Voter education and electoral participation,' the short film calls for greater voter participation for ushering in a stronger democracy. The pre-requisite is “be the change you want to see.” Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar in his brief appearance says that the election is being conducted in a transparent manner and any complaints could be registered over the toll-free telephone number 1965
Additional Electoral Officer P. Amudha says that the officials would issue the booth slips, carrying the names, addresses and the photographs of the voters. She emphasises that all must vote as per their conscience to establish the people's rule. Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam says that “you want to move ahead, further ahead, for which you need to exercise your democratic right this time and every time.” Mr Srikkanth and Mr Dhoni too advocate voting without any fear or favour.
Moreover, to reach the constituencies of the illiterates, semi-literates and the youth, the Election Commission has also strung together a few skits. For instance, two boys stalking a girl are taken by surprise when she turns back and asks them how come they are trailing her to every place except the polling station. Her remarks that “only a good citizen can make a good family man” prompts them to immediately rush to the polling station. In another enactment, a man tells his wife that he is going to school to seek LKG admission for their child.
Since, it happens to be a polling day, she suggests that they should not shirk their democratic responsibility and therefore should take turns in the queues at the school and at the polling station because the future well-being of the country is as important as that of their child. Certain youths also crisply convey the message that ill health, migration, government holiday and work compulsion should not deter the voters from going to the polling stations.
While shifting residences the people never forget to change the address in the ration cards and the electricity bills, and, in the case of electoral rolls also they should act with equal alacrity. The campaign-van that attracts the curious onlookers then rolls on to another destination.
