CUDDALORE:
The residents of Cuddalore have made an appeal to Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar to change the format of the candidates' lists to be inserted in the Electronic Voting Machines.
The Federation of All Residents Welfare Associations-Cuddalore in a representation to the CEO has stated that hitherto the lists were prepared on the alphabetical order of the candidates' names. This presented a jumbled appearance as the Independents would get precedence over the candidates of the recognised and registered political parties and this baffled the electorate. Therefore, to avoid any such confusion, the candidates' lists should be prepared starting with the candidates of the recognised parties followed by that of the registered parties and the Independents.
It further stated that since there were restrictions on publicity materials, the electorate did not get the opportunity to know the candidates. Hence, it would be appropriate to display the details of the candidates, including their assets and antecedents, in public places for the perusal of the voters of the respective constituencies at the expense of the Election Commission.
It called for putting the poll expenses of the candidates, as and when these were filed with the returning officers, in public domain by posting these on the Internet. The Federation called for closure of the TASMAC retail outlets and attached bars from April 1 to 13, the day of polling. It suggested provision of transport by the Election Commission for the fully disabled voters and those crossed 80 years of age, and, setting up of separate polling stations for the hospitalized voters.
