CUDDALORE:
A peahen brought in a critical condition to the Thevanampattinam police station died after it was shifted to the Forest Department office at Semmandalam near here on Tuesday. Later, the carcass was sent to the Animal Husbandry Department for conducting post-mortem to ascertain the cause of the death. The two-year-old peahen strayed into a farmland where onion crop was raised near the Thevanampattinam coast.
The peahen was said to have been chased by crows that pecked vigorously at its neck. Some residents brought the peahen to the Thevanampattinam police station. Then, it was handed over to the Forest Department personnel. Hearing this, J. Poonam Chand, an animal and bird lover, tried at all means of reviving the bird. He also tried to resuscitate the bird through artificial respiration. However, it could not respond. He cited three possible reasons for its death –excessive heat; badly injured by the chasing crows as claimed; or it could have eaten something that would have endangered its life. Forest Ranger V.Srinivasan told TheHindu that the reason could be known only after post-mortem.
