CUDDALORE:

The members of the Federation of all Residents' Welfare Associations-Cuddalore staged a demonstration in front of the Municipality here on Wednesday urging the authorities to expedite the work on the construction of a subway at the Lawrence Road railway crossing.

The Federation made an appeal to District Collector V.Amuthavalli to convene a meeting of the officials of the civic body, Highways Department and the Southern Railway to prepare a plan of action to be carried out within a timeframe. It urged the district administration to put such an action plan within the public domain too. General secretary of the Federation M.Maruthavanan said that a year ago the Highways Department had handed over a sum of Rs 2 crore to the municipality to take up the works, but the latter was dilly dallying for so long a period.

Since the railway crossing was located in the commercial hub of Cuddalore town the frequent closure of gates for facilitating passage of trains was causing immense hardship to the commuters. The civic body continued to remain insensitive to the plight of the travelling public. Besides taking stock of the execution aspect the joint meeting should also pay attention to developing the alternative routes such as the Khammiampettai road and the Jawan's Bhavan road. The Federation also appealed to Rural Industries Minister M.C.Sampath to convene a meeting of the officials and the representatives of the social service organisations to explore the ways and means of expediting the project execution.
