The Inspector of Matriculation Schools has issued a show-cause notice to Kamaraj Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Chidambaram as to why its recognition should not be cancelled for conducting unauthorised Plus-1 and Plus-2 classes, according to Chief Educational Officer C.Amudhavalli.
She told The Hindu that the school management was also running another school styled Kamaraj Matriculation Special School (meant for normal students and not for differently-abled persons as its name suggests) at Vayalur, which had permission to run classes only up to X Standard. The main school was conducting Plus-1 and Plus-2 classes at Vayalur and only at the time of public examinations it was showing those students as its candidates. The management could not assume such a devious role in imparting education and therefore it had been served with the show-cause notice, Ms. Amudhavalli said.
She further said that the Educational Department had received a spate of complaints against the school management alleging that it was collecting fees in excess of what was stipulated by Justice Raviraja Pandian Committee. Certain students along with their parents protested the arbitrary fee structure of the school. But the management did not take kindly to them and to penalise them it had issued transfer certificates (TCs) to at least 40 students of various classes.
Ms. Amudhavalli pointed out that the management had gone to the extent of taking “disciplinary action” against a Class III student for objecting to the fee structure. Since the students and parents refused to take the TCs, the management had sent them by post to their addresses. The CEO further said that when she went to the school to inspect the records about the fee structure the correspondent of the school refused to oblige and stated that he would do so only after consulting his lawyer.
Ms. Amudhavalli also stated that doubts too were raised over the ownership of the school land. This aspect was brought to the notice of District Collector V.Amuthavalli. A “peace committee” meeting would be held on June 27 in which the representatives of the Parents-Teachers' Association, the management and revenue officials would participate to resolve the issue of fee structure. The CEO emphatically said that if the management continued to disregard the new fee structure, the Education Department would take stringent measure; that is, either derecognise the school or recommend it for government take-over.
