CUDDALORE:
Three persons were injured in a minor blast that occurred in a fruit shop located on Bazaar Street at Sethiathope near here on Monday. The injured have been identified as shopkeeper Ramalingam and his assistants Velmurugan and Kumar. The police said that the blast was caused by chemical ripening agent calcium carbide.
After spreading the chemical over the fruits, Velmurugan and Kumar had sprinkled water to increase the humidity and hasten the ripening process. However, the temperature in the closed room, where the fruits were kept, shot up suddenly owing to chemical reaction, resulting in the blast.
