Intensive tree planting drive on Children's Day

Green wave: Tree planting drive at Akshara Vidhyashram in Cuddalore on Sunday

CUDDALORE:

Akshara Vidyaashram at Kondur in Cuddalore has been making concerted efforts to transform the institution into a “green campus.” As part of the Children's Day celebration the school today planted 100 saplings, thereby taking the number of plants on the campus to 1,100.

If the global warming has to be checked it could be possible only through expansion of greenery and the sensitization on this aspect ought to begin at the school level, according to T.Ramani Sankar, managing trustee of Akshara Vidyaashram. While the school buildings occupy 10 acres of the 25-acre campus, the management has been left with ample space to grow very many species of trees. Mr Sankar told The Hindu that already 1,000 trees had been raised on the school premises.

He was sure that the trees would not come in the way of future expansion of the school because the landscaping was done in such a way that the civil structures would not disturb the existing trees. He further said that the management was keen that the students should imbibe the knowledge that environment protection was the best bet for ensuring the safety of posterity. It was a common knowledge that setting up of more and more air-conditioning units would further aggravate the problem of global warming. Hence, conscious efforts were being made to set the classrooms in natural environment so as to let the breeze waft through without any hindrance.

Sunday's drive was carried out in coordination with G.Mullaivanan of the Tree Bank, Chennai, who has been spreading the greenery campaign to the educational institutions across the country. The students planted the saplings of varies species such as konnai, vembu, vaagai, teak, mandarai, sarakkollai, mango, peepul and so on. The exercise also enabled the students to know about the characteristics of the tree species. The occasion also acquired significance by the visit of Sagar (25), a college student from Maharashtra, who has embarked upon a countrywide cycle expedition to spread the message of environment protection. Till date he had passed through seven States, pedalling a total distance of 5,000 km.
