Rs. 301 crore for flood management: Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam

CUDDALORE:

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 301 crore for undertaking permanent flood control measures in Cuddalore district, according to Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam.

He inspected water sources and flood-affected areas in the district on Sunday. He was accompanied by Collector P. Seetharaman, District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan, MLA D. Ravikumar, and officials of the Water Resource Department. Initially, he inspected the mouth of the Kannathal canal which carried excess water from the Pandian Eri, and, later, the point where the discharge from the Veeranam tank joined the Palar.

Compensation

Mr. Panneerselvam also inspected the damage caused by floods at Sathapadi, Bharadhampattu, Kothavacheri, Adur Agaram, Paravanaru and Kalgunam. He told presspersons that in the last two days, rain had claimed three lives in the district. The victims were Manickam (75) of Kanaragapattu, Alfonse Mary (75) of Kurinjikudi and Ajit Kumar (15) of Venkatesapuram. Their families would soon get compensation from the government. The Minister also said that a total of 1,273 huts were partly damaged, and, 530 huts and 18 tiled houses fully damaged.

Food packets distributed

The district administration had, so far, distributed 27,245 food packets to rain-affected people. On the Minister's behalf, a total of 5,000 food packets were distributed on Sunday in the Kurinjipadi block. Mr. Panneerselvam underscored the point that during rainy season, rivers such as the Gedilam, the Vellar, the Pennaiyar, the Paravanar and the Kollidam would be in spate wreaking havoc in the district. Therefore, to find a permanent solution to the recurring problem, the “Aruvamookku project” had been readied and work would start soon. It envisaged diversion of flood water through a sickle-like formation at Thiruchopuram into the Bay of Bengal.
