Consumer courts urged to conduct proceedings in Tamil

CUDDALORE:

Consumer organisations here have made a plea to conduct proceedings of all District Consumer Courts in Tamil. When attempts are being made to make Tamil a court language in the State, the consumer courts could not continue to follow the British legacy.

A resolution was adopted at a meeting of consumer organisations and social activists held at the Town Hall here to mark National Consumer Day on Friday. Though consumers used to file cases in Tamil, the proceedings were invariably conducted in English. Judges were accustomed to making comments in English. This rendered the provision enabling aggrieved consumers to argue their own cases in their mother tongue superfluous and hampered fair representation.

In another resolution, the meeting urged the consumer courts to dispose of cases within 90 days of listing, as stipulated under the Consumer Protection Act. For want of judges, cases in the consumer courts in Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Perambalur and Sivagangai were pending for years.
