CUDDALORE:
Over 10,000 weavers' families in Cuddalore district have been affected by the recent spell of rain and subsequent floods. However, they are not given any compensation so far.
Hence, they staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. According to S.Dakshinamurthy, presiding of the Cuddalore District Handloom Weavers and Allied Services Workers Association, there were about 5,000 handloom weavers spread over places such as Sandrorpalayam, Suthukulam, Manakkuppam, Pudupettai, Bhuvanagiri, Vandipalayam and K.N.Pettai.
Another 5,000 families were involved in the support services such as preparing the warp and weft. All these families were rendered jobless for over a month owing to rains. Mr. Dakshinamurthy said during rainy season the yarn would get dampened, rendering weaving impossible. Another drawback to the weavers in the region was that they were yet to get an exposure to modern weaving technology.
