CUDDALORE:
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Jayalalithaa has called upon voters to exercise their franchise without fail and protect democracy. Election is the democratic means through which they can throw away the corruption-ridden ruling dispensation, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa was addressing a public rally at the Manjakuppam grounds here in support of alliance candidates on Tuesday. She said that Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had been appealing to people to re-elect him as Chief Minister for the sixth time. She alleged that Mr. Karunanidhi's rule was not only steeped in corruption but also adept in deceiving people.
The power was not only concentrated in the hands of a single family but corruption had reached its pinnacle now. Ms. Jayalalithaa said that the soaring inflation was not a natural phenomenon but artificial, for which she squarely blamed the Karunanidhi family. In the past five years, the family had amassed wealth hugely. The law and order situation had also deteriorated, she alleged . .
Funds sanctioned for government schemes were also swindled, she added. Mr. Karunanidhi had betrayed the interest of Tamil people in the Cauvery water sharing agreement and remained complacent over the report that Karanataka was attempting to tap water from the Mettur dam.
