CUDDALORE:
A 22-year-old woman was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a five-member gang near Neyveli town. Police arrested nabbed two persons, allegedly involved in the crime, and launched a hunt for three others.
Superintendent of police P Pakalavan said R Kavitha, daughter of a contract worker in NLC, worked in a bakery in Neyveli. She was returning home in her bicycle around 9 pm on April 26 when a five-member gang, who got off from a Maruti Omni, accosted her and bundled her into the car, he police. The men took her to a secluded spot in Nariyankuppam village near Panruti and raped her in a cashewnut grove. They later strangled her to death and buried the body along the roadside near Mettupalayam in Cuddalore district.
When the woman did not return home, her brother lodged a complaint with the Neyveli Thermal police station. Police have formed a special team to trace the woman. There was no major breakthrough in the case until the team detained two youths from Panruti following a tip off on Monday.
