Uppanar bridge work under way at Thazhanguda Cuddalore

CUDDALORE:

Work on the construction of a high-level bridge across the Uppanar at Thazhanguda, a coastal area, near here are progressing at a fast pace.

The bridge, estimated to cost Rs 5 crore, is expected to be ready by September/October this year. Sources in the Highways Department, which has taken up the construction, told this correspondent that the work on the bridge was started last February. It was being executed from the funds provided from the Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project.

The bridge would measure 116.2 metre length, 12 metre wide and five metre high (from the ground). It would have seven spans of 16.6 metre width each. As many as 75 employees were engaged in the project and at every stage the soil quality and the weight- bearing capacity of the soil were checked. The sources said that although the construction of the main structures was progressing according to schedule there was some difficulties in the formation of the abutments, the supporting structure, on either side of the bridge.

It was stipulated that the abutments should be raised on a strong foundation dig up to a depth of three-and-half metres. The constant seepage of water, occurring while digging was in progress, required incessant pumping out of water. The technicians at the site had tried the pump-sets with normal capacity, just as the ones used in other sites, but since the volume of water to be evacuated happened to be enormous at Thazhanguda, it had become necessary to requisition the pump-sets with correspondingly proportionate drawing capacity.

Sources further said that though the problem was insurmountable it did pose certain hurdles as the Uppanar happened to be almost a perennial water source and even summer months it had a steady flow, not to speak of the monsoon months. A high-level bridge at this place has been the long standing need of the residents of Thazhanguda. As of now they have to pass through a low-lying causeway that will get flooded whenever there is torrential rain. During rainy season Thazhanguda will be cut off from the rest of Cuddalore because the causeway would be covered under neck deep water, making commutation impossible. Since, Thanzhaguda is surrounded by the Uppanar river on all three sides and the sea on other side, the causeway is the only land link to Cuddalore.
