CUDDALORE:
The Irula families, residing at various places in Cuddalore district, gathered in front of the Collecatorate here and observed a day-long fast on Monday in support of their demands.
Led by State president of the Sarpam Irula Workers' Association K.Srinivasan and district president S.Devadoss, they urged the authorities to provide basic amenities in their habitations located in all the six blocks of the district such as Cuddalore, Panruti, Chidambaram, Kattumannarkudi, Vriddhachalam and Thittakudi. They sought identity cards under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme, ration cards and Electors Photo Identity Cards.
They alleged that the officials were denying community certificates to their wards even after submission of valid supporting documents. The tribal leaders further stated that adequate protection should be given to tribal women to safeguard their rights and to save them from sexual harassment. They sought permanent rehabilitation measures for the Irulas living in the coastal areas, as this acquired urgency particularly in the post-tsunami period. Towards evening, a section of the Irulas grew restive and started squatting on the road to block vehicular traffic. The officials intervened and persuaded them to give up the road blockade.
