Security intensified in view of Ayodhya verdict

CUDDALORE:

Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis has said that in view of the scheduled pronouncement of the verdict on the title suits on the Ayodhya issue today, the entire security machinery in Cuddalore district has been kept on full alert.

Mr. Kotnis told reporters here on Wednesday that about 1,500 personnel, including those belonging to the local police and the armed constabulary, had been mobilised for the purpose. The bomb disposal squads in the headquarters as well as in the sub-divisions had been kept ready. Ten special striking forces, each consisting of one sub-inspector and 10 constables, would be doing the rounds.

At 80 sensitive places identified across the district, strong posses of police personnel had been deployed. Open line patrolling had been intensified and the personnel were on duty round-the-clock. Processions, public meetings, display of posters either supporting or opposing the verdict, and, distribution of sweets in public were prohibited. Mr. Kotnis said check-posts have been put up at 27 places to thoroughly scrutinise vehicles and the passengers. He pointed out that peace committee meetings had already been held impressing upon the communities the need to maintain peace, regardless of the nature of the verdict.

The leaders of various faiths had assured that they would not encourage any act that would mar public peace. Mr. Kotnis appealed to the people to coordinate with the law-enforcing authorities to ensure that normal life is not disrupted by any means. District Collector P. Seetharaman has stated that steps have been taken to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities.
