Office assistants government departments observe fast

CUDDALORE:

The office assistants of government departments observed a day-long fast in front of the Collectorate here on Monday.

They called upon the government to withdraw the order for reducing the number of office assistants and transferring the office assistants who were found in excess of 12:1 ratio to other departments. They urged the government to declare those serving in the municipalities and the panchayat unions as government employees and promote those assistants with requisite qualification as junior assistants.

Their demands included that pump operators, night watchmen, scavengers, cooks and helpers engaged in all government departments should also be designated as office assistants. The night watchmen employed on a consolidated salary in the temples under the purview of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment should be given time-scale pay. Those who had put in 10 years of service in all departments should be given time-scale pay and pension benefits.

V.Srinivasan, State vice-president and district president of the Tamil Nadu Government Office Assistants' and Employee's Association, and C.Bhaskaran, State deputy general secretary, Tamil Nadu Registration Department Office Assistants' Association participated.
