Jyothi, who died in a parcel bomb blast here, worked in a candle-making unit in Puducherry. She opened the parcel the factory owner Arunagiri had sent her in a fake name from Cuddalore in her house at Ariyankuppam on Tuesday and it exploded injuring her severely. She later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Senior superintendent of Police (Law and Order) V J Chandran said Arunagiri was present near the blast spot, watching Jyothi receive the parcel and after the explosion had even helped the victim’s mother Saroja to take her daughter to the hospital. Saying that the bomb was being used for the first time in the Union territory, Chandran said Arunagiri could have killed himself during the making of the bomb had he committed even a slight error.
According to police, Arunagiri had worked in a welding shop and knew about electronics. He made a parcel bomb using cracker powder, procured from a shop in Nettapakkam, and ball bearings, purchased from the Nellithope area. After connecting the device, he packed and sent it through The Professional Couriers in the name of Anbu, who was engaged by Jyothi’s parents for identifying potential grooms for her. Arunagiri had a week ago sent a parcel containing a plastic item to Jyothi through the courier firm from Cuddalore in another fake name to check if it reaches her. Jyothi had received it.
Arunagiri, who was produced before the media on Wednesday evening, also explained how he made the explosive device. Chandran said Arunagiri was arrested at 3 pm on Wednesday and would be remanded in judicial custody. Further investigations on
