Water supply for irrigation stepped up

CUDDALORE:

The discharge from the Lower Anicut into the Vadavar (the feeder canal for the Veeranam tank) is being maintained at 2,075 cusecs to meet the requirements of the ayacutdars, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.

In a statement released here, he said farmers had recently made representations to him stating that the elevated farmlands under the Vadavar system and the tail-end ayacut areas under the Sethiathope anicut could not get adequate water for irrigation because of insufficient supply. Hence, arrangements had been made to step up the discharge from the Coleroon into the Lower Anicut to enhance inflow into the Vadavar. As of now, 400 cusecs of water was let out for irrigation from the Veeranam tank, 75 cusecs for drinking purpose to Chennai and 650 cusecs into the Sethiathope anicut. The Collector urged the farmers to use water judiciously.
