CUDDALORE:
The State government has allotted a sum of Rs. 16.15 crore under special roads scheme to Cuddalore district.
The funds will be utilised for improving existing roads and laying cement roads in municipalities such as Cuddalore, Panruti, Vriddhachalam, Nellikuppam and Chidambaram, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.
He told presspersons here that all road works would be completed by March 31 next. The government had earmarked a total of Rs. 1,000 crore for the construction of tar and cement roads in the municipalities and town panchayats in the entire State, which included Rs. 16.15 crore for Cuddalore district.
As regards Cuddalore town, a sum of Rs. 10.38 crore had been sanctioned under the special scheme for construction of 40 roads and another Rs. 10.32 crore by the Highways Department for 75 roads. Cuddalore Municipal Chairman T. Thangarasu issued work orders on Wednesday for laying cement roads to a distance of 17.65 km at a cost of Rs. 8 crore and tar roads to a distance of 5.94 km at a cost of Rs. 2.11 crore. As the northeast monsoon was active over Cuddalore, the road works would begin in the third week of December.
In Panruti municipality, 7.81 km-long tar roads would be laid at a cost of Rs. 1.33 crore and 7.81 km-long cement roads laid at a cost of Rs. 1.39 crore. In Vriddhachalam municipality, work on 13 cement roads would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 80.10 lakh and work on 28 tar roads at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crore. In Nellikuppam municipality, 14 tar roads would be laid at a cost of Rs. 1.02 crore and in Chidambaram municipality road works would be undertaken on Western Car Street at a cost of Rs. 65 lakh.
Another sum of Rs. 2.5 crore had been allotted for improving Chidambaram-Sivapuri-Kavarapattu Street, Venugopalapuram Street and the traffic roundabout in Chidambaram town, Mr. Seetharaman said.
