Battered: Many places in the Oldtown area in Cuddalore remained under water on Wednesday.
CUDDALORE:
Vehicular traffic on Vadalur-Kumbakonam road near here was disrupted on Wednesday owing to the overflowing Paravanar at Maruvai. The canals on either side of the road are carrying water beyond their capacity, thereby, inundating farmlands and habitations.
Meanwhile, the Veeranam tank has been getting a steady inflow of 1,300 cusecs and to maintain the level at 42 ft (maximum 47.5 ft), 1,500 cusecs of water is being released from the tank.
This time around, the authorities are discharging excesses from the Veeranam tank into Paal Vaikkal instead of the Velliangal Odai. Earlier, the Velliangal Odai, through which heavy volume of water was let out from the tank, caused havoc in at least 40 villages . While water-logging has been cleared in three of these places the residents of Nandimangalam are still reeling under the impact of the heavy rain. Collector P. Seetharaman, along with officials, including District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan and Public Relations Officer Pon. Muthiah, visited these areas on Wednesday to organise relief measures.
On the instruction of Health Minister M.R.K.Panneerselvam, the Collector also arranged for distribution of 10,000 food packets to residents of rain-affected areas in 10 villages in Kurinjipadi Assembly constituency, including Varadarajanpettai, Maruvai, Kalgunam, Kothavacheri, Kundiamallur and Andikuppam. The Collector also checked foodgrain stocks in the Cuddalore and Kattumannarkoil godowns of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and arranged for the transportation of the required quantity of rice to the rain-hit areas.
Later, the Collector inspected submerged crops at places such as Keerapalayam, Sethiathope and B.Mutlur. He also met the residents at Veeranatham, Keezhavalliyur, Kumaratchi, Kopadi, Meyyathur, Pudhu Pulamedu, Nanjalur and Kathazhai, who related their difficulties to him. The Collector said that the officials were monitoring water sources and also keeping ready sandbags and other materials to plug any breaches.
Residents' woes
Residents of Periyar Nagar and Suthukulam in the Old Town area have complained for want of proper drainage system inundation had become a common feature, throwing normal life out of gear.
A. Bhaskar (37), a resident, said that the canal running along the elevated railway track in the area was too small to carry stormwater and sewage. A small causeway with inlaid pipes could hardly act as the conduit for draining the rainwater. As a result, pot-hole filled roads filled with hip-deep water were posing grave danger to the commuters. A high-level bridge at this point would mitigate their sufferings, Mr. Bhaskar added.
Holiday
Owing to incessant rain, Collector Seetharaman declared holiday for all the schools in the district on Thursday. On account of continuous downpour, Villupuram Collector R.Palanisamy declared holiday for all schools in Villupuram district on Thursday.
